The annual Brazilian Carnival parties run by Leeds DJs Lubi Jovanovic (DJ Lubi) and Fabio Bahia over the last 2.5 decades are always epic....live music, top Brazilian DJs, samba dancers, caipirinha. They bring the flavour of Rio carnival to Leeds without the 9,000 mile flight. In 2025, they're back at Belgrave Music Hall on Saturday 1st March with their Brazil Carnival party for 2025, featuring the top 12 piece band Gustavo Andrade & The Brazukas with special guests Maya Blandy, Zagotinho Do Acordeon and Babo Moreno playing live early doors. Then the north's finest Brazilian DJs Fabio Bahia and Diogo Vaz will rock the party until 3am Rio style.
Gustavo Andrade & The Brasukas have established themselves as the leading Brazilian music band in the north of England in the 2 years since their formation in Leeds.
In 2024, they played sold out shows at Band On The Wall Manchester, Peggy's Skylight Nottingham, Brudenell Leeds, all Brazil Carnival 2024 parties, as well as Headrow House in the autumn. At the end of May 2024, the band closed the Leeds Jazz Festival/Welcome To Leeds open air stage on the Saturday with the biggest crowd attendance ever for this stage since the festival launched. This year, they have a UK Brazil Carnival tour with 6 shows across the north kicking off with this hometown show.
They will play an extended set featuring carnival songs and rhythms from across Brazil with some very special guests joining them onstage. Portuguese/UK vocalist Maya Blandy has already performed with the band on lead vocals, as has Manchester based Brazilian master piano accordionist and king of forró Zagotinho Do Acordeon. Top London Brazilian drummer/percussionist Babo Moreno joins them for the first time, coming off a winter world tour drumming for UK/Brazilian nufolk/bossa singer Liana Flores. More guests to be confirmed.
Brazilian saxophonist Gustavo Andrade came to Leeds from Sao Paulo in 2019 to study jazz at Leeds Conservatoire. Just as he started gigging with jazz, soul and hip-hop bands in 2020, the pandemic shut down society and gigs stopped. He returned in summer 2021 playing Brazilian music, and since then, he's lit up the Brazilian music scene in the north of England. First with his bossa jazz band Quinteto Gustavo Andrade and in recent times, with his 10 piece big band Gustavo Andrade & The Brasukas.
The Brasukas perform the full spectrum of Brazilian music - Samba, MPB (Música Popular Brasileiro), Bossa Nova, Samba Rock, Axé, Forró,Brazilian soul, Frevo, Rio Jazz-Funk - and feature top musicians from the Leeds jazz/world music scenes who play with bands like Plantfood, Carioca Soul, Orchestra Mambo International, Tempo Feliz, Awen Ensemble, Mangorata and Away From Home. They play Gustavo's arrangements of classic Brazilian music by artists such as Leci Brandao, Seu Jorge, Jorge Ben, Ivete Sangalo, Tim Maia, Tom Jobim, Gilberto Gil, Ed Motta, Alcione and Djavan. There simply is no other Brazilian music band like them in the north. Come down and get some funky samba magic in your soul. Tonight from 9pm onwards, they will feature Brazilian carnival music from across all the regions of the country in an extended 90 minute set.
DJs on the night are the two best Brazilian DJs in the north of England. Fabio Bahia is the daddy of Brazilian DJing in the north, having started back in 1996 playing records in Leeds and Manchester. Over the years, he's become one of the best known Brazilian music DJs and promoters in the north. He'll be playing the pagode, samba, forro and MPB around the live band sets. Diogo Vaz has been DJing in the north for over a decade and a half now. Resident DJ at the Latin/Brazilian weekly party Bella Gente at Backroom Leeds for many years now, he's known for his kicking baile funk and samba house sets as well as playing more traditional music like samba and forro. They will rock the party from 11pm to 2am.
***caipirinhas will be served as always at Belgrave x Brazil Carnival parties***
