After a packed and sold out Olivia Cuttill Quintet show at Hyde Park Book Club Leeds in January, some of the musicians from that gig return to the venue on Sunday 17th March in their other band Mangorata. Trumpeter Olivia Cuttill, drummer Miles Pillinger, saxophonist James Absalom and double bass player Chris Williams are joined by bandmates Liam Mason on keys and JJ Petrie on congas for the first Mangorata Leeds show of 2024. It's been a while since their last show in the city so here's a quick reminder of who they are and what they do.
Six Leeds based musicians came together to form Mangorata back in 2021. A sound characterized by wild and inventive improvisation in a fusion of Afro-Cuban, Brazilian, Spiritual Jazz and Funk grooves. With a wide array of textures, Mangorata are unafraid to lead their musical stories in fully fledged bustling rhythm or stripped back intimacy. Their shows have already taken them many times around the Leeds circuit and beyond to multiple areas of the UK. The band’s inspiration draws upon the works of musical legends such as Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, Wayne Shorter, Hermeto Pascoal, Stone Alliance and many more. Mangorata’s own work, their debut self titled EP, was described by Jazz FM DJs as “First class” (John Osbourne), "Very much feeling this'' (Dom Servini, "Amazing!" (Tony Minvielle) and by NTS DJ Patrick Forge as "impressive for such a young band". In 2024, they are back with great new music and more live gigs. Come and check out their progression.
Support is from a new jazz group coming out of Leeds Conservatoire called Away From Home who are fronted by an already familiar face on the Leeds jazz/global beats scene - trombonist Benji Arnold. They play with popular bands like Gustavo Andrade & The Brasukas, Rumberos de Palo, Goddess Collective etc. Here's the bio :
Energetic, youthful, and occasionally gloriously wonky, Leeds-based jazz quintet Away From Home unleashes its original swinging tunes. With an acoustic rhythm section and bottom-heavy horns, they've got rich tones and new ideas every time they play. Influenced by Mingus, Phronesis & Don Ellis.
Already impressing people at a few early gigs, get down for 8pm and catch Away From Home and see the next wave of Leeds jazz musicians at the start of their journey.
