ULLAPOOL, Scotland – RuMac (Ruairidh Maclean), the “weird guy” making “weird music” who insists his fans “have fun or feck off”, is proud to announce the release of his debut album The Bloody Box. This uproarious new record showcases RuMac’s one-of-a-kind comedy persona and high-octane folk-punk sound, blending music and humor in a way that has already made his live shows legendary. Fresh off a viral TV performance that even left Simon Cowell declaring “I’ve never heard anything like this… it was fantastically mad”, RuMac is unleashing that same anarchic energy on The Bloody Box for listeners everywhere. On The Bloody Box, RuMac’s comedy and musical mayhem go hand-in-hand. Fans can expect “twisted folk-punk versions of classic hits” delivered with tongue-in-cheek flair. RuMac turns well-known anthems upside-down – from an accordion-driven take on AC/DC’s “Thunderstruck” to a raucous cover of Dr. Hook’s satirical gem “Everybody’s Makin’ It Big But Me” – each track packed with sonic surprises and punchlines. Known for his “off-kilter, abrasive and energetic” performances, RuMac brings that same wild stage spirit into the studio. He wields his accordion as both instrument and comedic prop, “armed only with his accordion and ancient Highland fury” as he mashes up bagpipe sounds, punk rock attitude, and cheeky theatrics. The result is a listening experience that’s equal parts concert, comedy show, and ceilidh gone awry.
Even the album’s title reflects RuMac’s devilishly witty style. The Bloody Box is a nod to RuMac’s own tongue-in-cheek mythology: “The devil doesn’t play the fiddle… the devil plays the bloody box,” he likes to joke. It’s a playful twist on an old saying, asserting that the accordion – affectionately known as “the box” – is the true instrument of chaos. That mischievous theme runs throughout the album. From start to finish, The Bloody Box embraces RuMac’s love of the absurd. Thunderous drum beats and even banjo riffs burst forth from his electrified accordion (according to RuMac’s infamous “origin story,” he once rigged his accordion with a mysterious device to unleash “sounds from hell” in a conservative music academy). The album captures that fictional mayhem in musical form, inviting listeners to laugh, mosh, and maybe raise a glass to the devil’s own jester of the Highlands.
